‘LA Weight Loss’ to return up to $ 800,000 to customers
The Washington state Attorney General’s Office has reached a settlement with three weight-loss companies (LA Weight Loss Centers Inc., LA Weight Loss Franchise Co. and NWM Inc.) accused of luring customers with low-price deals and then pushing additional food and costly, unproven supplements to increase the membership price. Apparently, all these three organizations belong to a common umbrella.
"Weight loss programs and health clubs have an ethical and legal obligation to adequately disclose details about program costs before customers sign a contract," Attorney General Rob McKenna said in a statement released Friday. "They should also clearly explain how the program works and what is expected so that consumers can make an informed choice whether to join."
The companies will have to reimburse customers up to $800,000. Also, they will pay $75,000 in legal fees and an undecided amount for consumer education.
