Winslet Wins Over Weight-Loss Story
Kate Winslet is a natural woman and now has the libel damages to back it up.
The Oscar nominee won undisclosed damages from a magazine that had accused her of using a diet doctor, implying that she was a hypocrite about defying the super-skinny Hollywood ideal, report news sources.
"I am delighted that this matter has been resolved, and the record set straight," says Winslet in a statement. "I am not a hypocrite. I have always been, and shall continue to be, honest when it comes to body/weight issues."
The February article in Britain’s Grazia magazine claimed that she had made "mystery visits" to the Chinese Healing Institute in California to see diet doctor Dr. Yi Pan for weight loss. In actuality, Winslet had met the doctor for a neck injury.
"[Grazia] stated [in the article]… that Kate had approached a doctor for help with her weight despite the fact that she has previously said that she will not bow to Hollywood pressure of being skinny," her attorney, Rachel Atkins, from law firm Schillings told the court Friday. "The article suggested she had lied to the public."
In addition to the damages, the actress was also given an apology and compensation for legal costs.
"Grazia magazine has apologized to me in full, and admitted that their story was incorrect, which gives me tremendous peace of mind," says Winslet. "I feel very strongly that ‘curves’ are natural, womanly and real."
"I shall continue to hope that women are able to believe in themselves for who they are inside, and not feel under such incredible pressure to be unnaturally thin. I am donating the ‘damages’ given to me by Grazia, to an eating disorder charity."
